Pros & Cons

Pros & Cons

  • The Shimano Ultegra R8170 C50 wheels are light, reliable and fast!
  • With a weight of 1562 grams, this wheelset belongs to the lighter wheels on the market.
  • The comfort is achieved by a wide 21mm tubeless rim. This is suitable for 28mm tyres or wider.
  • The wheels are also tubeless compatible, which prevents the risk of punctures with latex and tubeless tyres.
  • The riding characteristics are unparalleled when it comes to steering and the sensitivity to wind is very low. The wheels feel one with the bike.
  • The Dura Ace 9170 C50 wheels take another 100 grams off the wheels, for the real weightweenies. Also the bearing quality is a step better.

Description

Description

With the Shimano Ultegra R8170 C50 disc brake wheels, you get a wheelset with a good balance between aerodynamics, stiffness and weight. The Ultegra R8170 wheels achieve similar aerodynamic properties as the Dura Ace R9270 wheels. This is partly due to the rim profile of 21mm internally and an external rim width of 28mm. This makes it possible to mount tyres from 28mm to 62mm. The spokes and spoke pattern have been reinforced to increase stiffness in acceleration. This makes the wheels 9% stiffer than a Dura Ace 9170 C40 wheelset.

Riding characteristics
The Shimano Ultegra C50 wheels feel at one with the bike. The aerodynamics of the wheels mean that crosswind is almost non-existent and the wheels are easy to keep up with. You notice that Shimano has paid a lot of attention to the stiffness and power transmission. When cornering in a fast descent you immediately feel how directly the wheels react and do not feel nervous. The wheels are versatile thanks to their low weight, which means they can also be used in the mountains.

The aerodynamics of the Shimano Ultegra R8170 C50 have been optimised. This is partly due to the wide rim profile of 28mm. Air resistance is significantly less on a rim with these proportions. Compared to Shimano Dura Ace R9100 C40 wheels, an impressive 5.1 watts of resistance is gained with a lower rim. In addition, another 1 watt is gained compared to the Shimano Dura Ace R9100 C60 tubular wheel. These gains were achieved while maintaining other properties such as stiffness, comfort and control.

Stiffness
To achieve higher stiffness, stronger spokes with a thickness of 1.5mm are used without compromising on weight. Stiffer riding characteristics are enhanced by increasing the immediate pedalling feel when accelerating. To this end, the body system has been further developed and added to the rear hub. And the power transfer has been increased by 63% in efficiency.

Weight
The most noticeable weight gain is in the outer rotating mass, or rims. Despite the rims becoming significantly wider, the Shimano team has developed rims that are lighter in spite of this. This is immediately noticeable when setting off, climbing or maintaining the speed of your Shimano Dura Ace wheels. This makes the Shimano Ultegra R8170 Disc wheels one of the most all-round wheels on the market.

Good experience with these wheels

- Simone D'Incau 25 September 2023

I had to wait a few days to do the review and I must say that I could not have chosen a better wheel. I went from a 30mm to the 50mm Ultegra. The stiffness is really phenomenal and the smoothness of the bearings despite being ball bearings is really performing. The lightness also makes these wheels really competitive and snappy. The only defect is that Shimano does not give wheel bags and centrelocks to fix the brake discs.
