Technology
Flexible, sturdy artificial leather with perforated ventilation holes for a perfect fitThis XC701 shoe is made of a very flexible synthetic leather, which guarantees an excellent fit. This provides high quality wearing comfort. The artificial leather also has perforated ventilation holes through which a cooling air flow can enter this cycling shoe. The chance of overheated feet is therefore minimal.
Two independent BOA L6 Dial fasteners for correct alignment
The two BOA L6 Dial rotary systems ensure quick and accurate adjustment. A simple twist on one of the two buttons is enough to make this MTB shoe a little tighter. In addition, BOA closures are easy and reliable to use, even when cycling.
The midsole is reinforced with carbon fiber and the outsole offers excellent grip
The midsole reinforced with carbon fiber is very stiff, which ensures good power transmission to the pedals. As a result, all your mountain bike efforts are converted to maximum speed and performance. The Michelin rubber pattern in the sole gives you the right balance between grip, durability and flexibility. This outsole also has a rough pattern, so you don't slip when you have to walk. If the conditions are very slippery you can put 18 mm studs under Shimano's XC701 mountain bike shoes.
In short, Shimano's XC701 MTB shoes work perfectly both on and off the bike.
User tips
Detailed explanation of sizing in mmIn order to help you, as best we can, to choose the right size shoe we have measured all the shoes ourselves. All that's left for you to do is measure your own foot length, and we'll tell you which shoe size per brand suits you best. Does your foot length in mm not appear on the relevant product's page? Then that particular shoe is not available in a size that suits your foot length.
You can easily measure your foot length using an A4 sheet of paper, placed on the floor against a wall. Stand with one foot on the piece of paper, with your heel against the wall. Draw a line above your big toe (or above the index toe if that is longer). Now mark your other foot on the paper in the same way. Measure both - the measurement of your longest foot is your foot length in mm's! Please note: some manufacturers have their own measuring system, and as a result what appears on the shoebox can deviate from what we have measured.
What shoe size you need can differ per brand. This is because certain brands wear larger or smaller. To help you get the perfect fit, we've also classified the shoes as narrow, average, or wide fit. Read all about it in our blog!

Great shoes
Great quality shoe, good balance of stiffness and comfort, boa adjustment is excellent and soles very grippy. I'm a UK9 and there was no need to size up they're a perfect fit. Highly recommended.

Amazingly comfy but super stiff shoes
This review is for the XC7 Shimano shoes but we also have the XC9's as a comparison. The XC7's pound for pound are on par with the XC9's same super stiff carbon sole and Michelin rubber sole - but the benefit is the rubber sole extends the full length of the sole unlike on the XC9's so lots more grip. The uppers make slipping them on like slippers with great boa placement and easy on and off system. Only difference we can see is the tongue setup on the 7's seem a little lower on the bridge of the foot but no issues on the first ride. These are not a narrow fit like some brands - Giro or Sidi so are a super fit out the box with no need for a wearing in period. Would we buy another pair? Without a doubt. 10/10
