Description

Description

The KICKR Core is one of Wahoo's new trainers; it comes between the KICKR Snap and KICKR Power Trainer. This interactive direct drive cycle trainer has a maximum power output of 1800 watts. Its gradient is up to 16%, and it is equipped with a heavy flywheel. As such, the KICKR Core is hardly inferior to Wahoo's top model. And it really is great value for money. As Team Ineos has been using Wahoo KICKR turbo trainers for many years, you may expect that these are high quality. For professional cyclists it is essential that their equipment provides highly reliable data and offers a ride feel that is as natural as possible.

Compatible with almost every bike

The KICKR Core is compatible with bikes with a standard 130 and 135 mm quick release mounting width. Thus, it can be used with both road and mountain bikes. Compatibility with thru axles has also been taken care of; both 12 x 142 and 'Boost' 12 x 148. More clearance has been created for bikes with disc brakes. Any bike with a wheel size between 24 and 29 inches can be placed easily into the KICKR Core bike trainer.

High wattage and great gradients

The wattage measurement is even more accurate than that of the Wahoo KICKR Snap. The KICKR Core can produce a power output up to 1800 watts. It can also simulate slopes up to 16%. The algorithms have been adjusted in such a way that you will experience a super realistic cycling feel while climbing and sprinting. The change of resistance flows exceptionally smoothly without feeling jerky. This is particularly important, and much more realistic than ever before, during acceleration, deceleration, going uphill and going downhill in Zwift programmes, for example.

Compatible with Wahoo KICKR Climb

Of course, the Wahoo KICKR Core also supports the Wahoo KICKR Climb. When the KICKR Climb is connected, it responds directly to the data of the virtual track and makes the front fork of your bike move up and down to allow you to sit in the same position as you would if you were really climbing or descending. This will make using your climbing muscles more realistic and improve your climbing technique Note: The Wahoo KICKR Climb is not included.

Technology

Connection with (cycle) computer, tablet or phone

The open source software makes this trainer ready for the future, especially when you consider how many new programmes are being developed. The Wahoo KICKR Core is currently compatible with more than 25 training programmes to enable you, its user, to select what you need. Partners include Zwift, TrainerRoad, Wahoo Fitness, Kinomap, Virtual Training, Skuga, Cadence VR, Veloreality and much more. The large choice of programmes, combined with the ANT+ FE-C, ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart 4.0 connectivity, ensures that you can work with various devices. Whether it's your Windows computer, Mac, iPhone, iPad, tablet or Android phone, there are training programmes for all of them.

The LED lights indicate the status of your connection

The LED lights make it easy to see whether you are connected via Bluetooth, ANT+ FE-C or ANT+. They also indicate whether the trainer is connected to the power supply.

Wahoo ELEMNT (Bolt) cycling computer

If you have a Wahoo ELEMNT or a Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt device, you can use it to control the Wahoo KICKR Core, through no less than 5 different programmes. It is also possible to re-ride a previous route through GPX on the device. The trainer automatically adjusts the resistance based on GPS coordinates.

Can also be used as a stand-alone trainer

When you don't connect the turbo trainer with a phone, tablet, computer or cycle computer, the Wahoo KICKR Core can also be used as a stand-alone trainer. Simply connect it to the power supply and cycle and shift as usual. It has a built-in progressive power curve that simulates air resistance and automatically adjusts itself as you speed up for a realistic cycling feel.

Frequently asked questions

Will my bike with disc brakes fit this Wahoo Turbo Trainer?
Yes, disc brakes are no problem. However, it is important that the axle fits correctly. The trainer comes standard with adapters for 142x12mm and 148x12mm thru-axles. These adapters are used in combination with your bike's axle.

Cassette supplied as standard?
No, the cassette is not included. You need to buy and install it yourself before you can use this trainer.

What cassette do I need for my trainer?
You will need the same type of cassette as your bike for smooth gear shifting. The only remaining question is whether it will fit your trainer. To determine this, we look at the brand of the cassette and the number of teeth. Does your bike have a Shimano or SRAM cassette? And one with 8 to 11 sprockets? Then your cassette will fit without any additional requirements. Depending on the cassette, you may need to place a number of spacers on the trainer body. Do you have a SRAM 12-speed drivetrain? Then you first need to install this SRAM XD/XD-R body.

What tools do I need to install a cassette on my Wahoo?
To install your cassette, you will need a chain whip and a cassette remover. These tools can be found here.

Can I use my Campagnolo equipped bike with this trainer?
Yes, you can with 9-12 speed groupsets. However, you will need to replace the default body with this Campagnolo body first.

A fine, stable and professional smarttrainer.

- Erik 20 November 2023

This is definitely a fine smart trainer. However, getting your bike all up-and-running is quite a lot of work. Mounting a casette is quite a job and then you have to adjust your derailleur. Then comes installing the necessary App(s) and activating them. Can imagine not everyone gets out of that just like that. (But perhaps I underestimate that.) Ideal to also buy Wahoo's cadence meter with it because in this case that is no longer measured via the Wahoo heart rate belt. (Outside on the bike, though.) A training mat is actually indispensable because you sweat a lot when training indoors. A fan on your face is also nice. Finally, I bought Tacx's tablet holder because you do want to use the screen now and again during training. With that thing, the tablet sits perfectly in front of your nose.

Pros & Cons

Quiet
Solidly built
Stable
Mounting the cassette is quite tricky
No on/off switch
