Buying a road bike? Wide range of racing bikes.

A good road bike is a bike that really suits you. Not only the frame size of your road bike, but also the material and the components. For example, do you want the lightest and most rigid road bike? Then you need a carbon road bike. If you don't want to spend too much money, then an aluminium road bike is the right choice fine. It is also very important to think about what you want to do with it. A road bike on which you will race is of course very different from a bike for a Sunday ride at times. But the terrain you will be cycling on is also important in your choice of a type of road bike. The days of only tight asphalt are long gone. Gravel bikes and cyclocrossers, for instance, are also increasingly common. There you can even go over the rougher trails where before you only saw mountain bikes.

What is the difference between a carbon and aluminium road bike?

When looking for a road bike, it is important to decide what material you want the frame to be made of. Here, you have a choice between a carbon or aluminium frame. An aluminium frame is often cheaper than a carbon frame. Also, an aluminium road-bikes can take a better beating and are easier to repair. A carbon road-bike, on the other hand, is a lot lighter, which (especially uphill) ensures that you will go a lot faster. Despite the fact that a carbon frame is slightly less sturdy, it does rust less quickly than an aluminium frame.

What's different about a women's road bike?

Not every woman enjoys cycling on a road bike made for men. That's why more and more women's road bike are available. The geometry is slightly different to better reflect the proportions of the female body. A woman who currently cycles on a men's racing bike and regularly suffers from cycling-related complaints might do well to look into a special women's racing bike.

What is a time trial bike?

Everything about a time trial bike is aimed at getting you to go as fast as possible on the road bike. The frame is often nice and narrow and also has a special shape to direct the wind as favourably as possible. On a time trial bike, you are very deeply forward. This can take some getting used to when you are around a time trial bike for the first time. The frame is also very stiff and the rims are often nice and high. On the top models, those wheels are even made of carbon. A time trial bike is not the lightest type of cyclist. This is because there is more time to be gained with aerodynamics than with a slightly lighter frame.

What is the benefit of a fitness bike?

A fitness bike is a very sporty bike that looks a lot like a road bike. But the frame and straight handlebars are made so that you are a lot more comfortable around this. So you don't hang in the stirrups like on a road bike. With a fitness cyclist, you can very well cycle a day trip at a slightly faster pace. You sit relatively upright and, thanks to the straight handlebars, you keep good control. A fitness cyclist is also often called a hybrid bike. But once you talk about a hybrid bike, it is a bike with mudguards and often also a luggage carrier.

What's different about an electric road bike?

The electric road bike is on the rise. These are road bikes that, in the angled tube have a battery that drives a mid-drive motor. In most good electric racing bikes, you can barely see that there is a motor inside. Gear shifting is as you are used to with a derailleur. The frame is pretty much the same as in road bikes without a motor. So only the angled tube is a bit thicker to make room for the battery.

What is a gravel bike?

A gravel bike is made for more challenging terrain. Where you used to only come across mountain bikes in the woods, you also see gravel bikes more and more often. But they are mainly made for roads with (very) bad road surfaces). Most gravel bikes have a frame that you also see on endurance road bikes. You sit fairly upright and comfortable. A gravel bike often also has wide tyres or at least room for wide tyres. 32, 35 and even 40 mm is quite normal on a gravel bike. Those wide tyres you can ride very low tyre pressure. 4 bar or even less is quite normal on this type of road bike. Thanks to that low tyre pressure, they smooth out bad road surfaces just fine. And that makes a gravel bike even more comfortable. To make room for those wide road bike tyres, a gravel road bike always has disc brakes. A gravel bike is also quite stiff and often has extra strong wheels.

What is best to use a cyclocross bike for?

A cyclocrosser is much like a gravel bike. Again, there is plenty of room for extra-wide tyres. A cyclocrosser is made to race in the woods and through fields. So that's basically the traditional terrain of mountain bikes. A cyclocrosser almost always has disc brakes. The advantage is that it allows you to use nice wide tyres, just like gravel bikes, because you have more space in the frame.
