With the introduction of 1x11, SRAM has demonstrated the benefits of a drive with one single chainring in combination with a wide range cassette. This way, you can keep the range about as big as with your double of triple, but without the problems of a front derailleur. A chainsuck or stuck front derailleurs will be things of the past. Moreover, the removal of excess gear material saves a nice amount of weight.

The X1 cassette consists of 8 steel sprockets that are attached to 3 CNC milled steel sprockets. This makes it quite a bit cheaper the more expensive CNC cassettes.
